Webinar Series – Elevate Your Anesthetic Practice (Session #3)

5th April 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

| USD 65 – USD 315

This Webinar Series consists of 3 sessions of between 1h 40min and 2 hours each. The live streams will take place on 17th of March, 24th of March and 5th of April and will be also available to watch ondemand.

Session #1: Keeping the Calm: Optimizing Sedation Protocols (Live Stream on 17/03/2021 at 7pm CET)

Rapid advances in pharmacology have put the days of holding frightened or struggling patients down for nail trims, imaging, and other procedures firmly in the past. Wading through the wide range of affordable options now available can sometimes feel overwhelming. In this interactive session, we will briefly review traditional and adjunctive options then apply them to different clinical scenarios using a case-based approach.

Session #2: Fact or Fiction? Breed Related Anesthesia Challenges (Live Stream on 24/03/2021 at 7pm CET)

Patient breed and conformation often take starring roles in anesthetic risk assessment. Valid concerns will be separated from hype using a case-based exploration of breed-related drug sensitivities, anatomic considerations, and the influence of breed-specific co-morbidities on drug selection, supportive care, and monitoring. Time will be reserved at the end of the session to address participant questions.

Session #3: Keep on Beating: Anesthetic Considerations for Cardiac Cases (Live Stream on 05/04/2021 at 7pm CET)

Weighing the risk of anesthesia against potential benefits of dental prophylaxis and other anesthetic procedures for patients with heart disease can be tricky! In this session, we will review the pathophysiology and anesthetic implications of common cardiac diseases. Case examples will be used to develop appropriate sedative and anesthetic protocols, discuss hemodynamic support, and tailor monitoring for patients with heart disease and common co-morbidities.

Speaker:

Khursheed Mama DVM, Dipl.ACVAA (American Specialist in Veterinary Anesthesia & Analgesia)
Dr. Mama developed her keen desire to work with animals while growing up in India where she was fortunate to have opportunities to ride horses and care for pet animals including dachshunds, guinea pigs and chickens. At the age of nine, while watching a procedure on a horse, she thought to herself, “surely we can do better,” but wasn’t seeing great training opportunities close to where she lived. So, after finishing high school in India, she applied and was accepted to Washington State University where she completed both her undergraduate and veterinary degrees. The Palouse was a stark contrast to the city of millions she grew up, but she was grateful to still be able to ride horses and through that build many cherished friendships. Upon graduation and still holding onto the thought that she would be an equine veterinarian (despite having enjoyed her anesthesia rotations in veterinary school) she pursued a large animal rotating internship at the University of Guelph. It was there she became convinced her true passion was indeed anesthesia. Therefore, she pursued an anesthesia and critical care residency at the University of California, Davis and worked there for a few years before moving to Colorado State University where she has been a faculty member since 1996. She enjoys managing a variety of species while also teaching DVM and graduate students and has pursued research interests directed at improving patient care and safety. She feels fortunate that as part of her job she has had the opportunity to advance anesthesia and pain management through continuing education for veterinarians in many different venues both nationally and internationally.
