ECVAA Standard Residency in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia

The National Veterinary School of Toulouse (ENVT) invites applications for a Standard ECVAA Residency in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, starting in January 2027.
This 3-year residency programme is designed to provide comprehensive specialist training in veterinary anaesthesia, analgesia and perioperative medicine, fulfilling the requirements established by the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA) and preparing the successful candidate for the ECVAA Diploma examination.
About ENVT
Founded in 1825, the National Veterinary School of Toulouse is the oldest higher education institution in Toulouse and one of the four French National Veterinary Schools. ENVT is a leading public veterinary institution under the French Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, internationally recognised for its excellence in veterinary education, clinical services and research.

The Residency Programme
The residency is supervised by Dr Caroline Didier, DVM, Diplomate ECVAA, within the Anaesthesia Unit of the ENVT Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Residents will receive comprehensive clinical training in anaesthesia, analgesia and perioperative care across multiple species while progressively developing autonomy under specialist supervision.
The Anaesthesia Department currently comprises three faculty members, including one ECVAA Diplomate, two ECVAA residents, three junior clinicians, dedicated anaesthesia nursing staff and close collaboration with all clinical services.
Clinical responsibilities include:
- Small animal anaesthesia and analgesia
- Anaesthesia for exotic species, with a particularly large caseload of rabbits and other companion exotic mammals
- Equine and ruminant anaesthesia
- Wildlife anaesthesia
- Perioperative pain management and critical patient care
- Clinical teaching and supervision of undergraduate veterinary students
The diversity of species and procedures performed at ENVT provides excellent exposure to anaesthetic management across a broad spectrum of veterinary medicine.
The residency includes anaesthesia externships as an integral component of the programme, allowing residents to broaden their clinical experience especially in species and procedures for which our caseload is less extensive.
Residents will also participate in research activities, scientific meetings, journal clubs and continuing professional development throughout the programme. They will be expected to complete the scholarly requirements established by the ECVAA, including research leading to publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Candidates requirements
Applicants must:
- Have a veterinary degree and be licensed to practice veterinary medicine and surgery in Europe.
- Have successfully completed either a rotating internship or an equivalent postgraduate clinical training.
- Demonstrate a strong interest in veterinary anaesthesia, analgesia and perioperative medicine.
- Possess excellent communication skills and enjoy working within a collaborative academic environment.
- Demonstrate proficiency in English, which is essential for the ECVAA certification process. French proficiency is not required although it is strongly recommended for day-to-day clinical activities and teaching.
